Family Sessions

With the option to have your session in-home, at an outdoor location within the New River Valley or Roanoke area including the Blue Ridge Mountains or a favorite community spot (think park, ice cream shop, etc) there’s endless options to create a family session that best represents your crew!

About Family Sessions

  • For families with kids of any ages & stages. Family’s from all backgrounds are welcome! Whether it’s your first time getting professional photos done or your annual tradition to get updated family pictures, there’s space for you on my calendar.

  • There’s several popular times of year in Southwest, Virginia for family photos, with fall seeming to be the MOST popular. Likely because the outside scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountain lit up with red, orange and yellows of the fall is hard to beat.

With that being said, don’t sleep on spring or summer photos. The greens of these seasons are beautiful and when flowers are in full bloom, many of the fields & gardens located throughout southwest Virginia make for stunning backgrounds for photos.

Not to mention the New River, Claytor Lake, and Carvin’s Cove are fun spots to splash in during sessions. Another plus getting photos done in the spring or summer…..schedules are more laid back and the evenings are longer which allows for fun and flexibility.

  • Prepare to spend about 45 -60 minutes together for your session. This gives everyone a chance to warm up to the camera and get comfortable so you can feel like you are bringing your best to the session.

  • Family sessions are priced at $450. You can pay in 3 installments of $150 or all at once. Whatever is most affordable for your budget.

  • You will receive an online gallery of your images in both high-resolution (for printing) and web-sized (for sharing). You can expect a minimum of 35 of the best images from your session. Enough for creating a gallery wall, album or holiday photos later in the year.

“Rebecca was so amazing and easy to work with.  Our photos turned out beautifully and I will recommend Threebird Photography to all who ask!”

FAQs

Can I include extended family in my session?

As long as the number of people in your session is under 8 then you can definitely include extended family. Should your party be larger, then we will need to adjust your session to account for your session needs,

What should I wear for my session?

Outfits that are simple, comfortable and bring out everyone’s confidence is always best! The easiest way to decide on outfits is to identify what can of look you want for your images. If you would like them to be laid back then nice t-shirts, khakis or jeans and rompers or sundresses can be an easy mix. If you prefer a more formal look then button down shirts, dress pants (in black, khaki or another color) a long flowing dress for mom, and a ruffled dress or suspenders can be great looks for littles. Clothes that allow for movement are great (I tend to prefer images that have cuddling, walking, twirling, or soft shifts to create visual interest). I put together an Amazon list for some outfit inspo that’s both affordable and beautiful for any family, click here to check it out!

Where is the best location for my family session?

Your family home is always a great option. Both indoors and outdoors can be used to provide backgrounds full of meeting. Home also gives options for formal and more documentary style images which adds incredible variety to your gallery. If you prefer outdoors, check out my blog article that covers some really beautiful locations in the New River Valley of Virginia and Roanoke Virginia area.

How can I best prepare for my family session, especially if I have young kids?

Depending on your kids ages there’s different things you can do to help everyone feel ready and excited for your session. Educating everyone (in an age appropriate way) about the session, why you guys are doing it, when and where it is, asking for ideas about images, outfits, etc that includes them in the process and generates excitement and ownership. Plan your session for the time of day that kids are happiest (especially if you have a family with littles). Ensuring they have had a good nap, meal and are set up for success is a way to keep EVERYONE happy. For more ideas to prepare click here.

Are we allowed to include our family pet?

Absolutely! There’s definitely some tricks to making this successful, so if you want to bring the family pup along to participate click here to read my top tips for including your four legged friend!

Am I able to reschedule if someone gets sick or something unexpected comes up?

Sure can. As a mom of three, I understand that life happens. Illness pops up unexpectedly, work trips, rescheduling of other events that are outside of control. If you need to reschedule, I just ask that you try to let me know as early as possible. This way I can open that date/time for someone else and we can also identify a date/time that works better for your session.
